Portsmouth Inactive Facility Removal
The Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant performed a mission of uranium enrichment for national defense and commercial energy production lasting nearly 50 years. In May 2001, uranium enrichment operations through gaseous diffusion ceased at the plant.
Several site facilities were inactive for a number of years and were determined to be no longer needed for other, ongoing site missions. These facilities have been removed to reduce site risks and long-term surveillance and maintenance costs.
Under a remediation services contract to the U.S. Department of Energy, LATA/Parallax Portsmouth, LLC and teaming partner CDM have demolished a number of these. Fourteen inactive facilities were removed between February 2006 and March 2007. Two additional facilities were removed in 2008.
